The Elusive Bog Turtle (And Friends)
In this 1-hour presentation, Amy will share her knowledge of the Bog Turtle including its habitat requirements, threats, the types of investigations that are often legally required for a variety of land disturbance activities, the regulations in place to protect the species and their potential effects on land development projects. Key identifying taxonomic characteristics of the other semi-aquatic turtles that share their wetland habitat will also be covered.
The presentation will end with a short hike to the ponds to look for basking turtles, wetland plants, and, (if there’s time and interest), a demonstration of radio-telemetry; a technique using transmitters that emit radio pulses used to track the movements of individual turtles with a directional antenna. Please wear shoes appropriate for walking on the paved and well-maintained paths and trails of Mt Cuba.
